Welcome to Kairosmaja

The silence and peace of nature in Lapland offer a unique opportunity to take a break from the everyday, stressive life. Come and enjoy the unforgettable midnight sun in the summer, or the wide open space of white silence of the winter months. Come hiking on the hills – or just sit quietly by the lake and let your soul rest.

Kairosmaja offers something both for body and mind: rest and relaxation, good food, a homely and cosy atmosphere, and short and longer Christian events.

Kairosmaja – a place of rest in Finnish Lapland

Kairosmaja Fell Center is located in Pelkosenniemi, at the foot of the fell called "Pyhätunturi" or "Pyhä", by the lake Pyhäjärvi, 50 kms to the north of the town of Kemijärvi.

The name of Kairosmaja is derived from the Greek word ‘kairos’ meaning God’s moment, and the Finnish word ‘maja’ meaning a lodge.

Kairosmaja has excellent facilities. After an adventurous day together with a group or alone in the nature, you may relax in a real Finnish sauna, dip in a hole in the ice in the lake in winter or visit the Chapel of the Northern Lights.

Activities and excursions

Activities and excursions

Kairosmaja offers good opportunities for summer trekking, snow shoe trekking, cross-country skiing, and paddling. During high season camp weeks, all activities are available with an experienced group guide. Sauna bathing and swimming in the lake – both in the summer and in the winter – are available.

For exploring the surrounding country on your own, excursion destinations include (distance from Kairosmaja in brackets):
  • Pyhä-Luosto National Park Visitors' Center (3,5 km)
  • Suvanto Museum Village, a village that was spared from destruction during World War II when nearly all the Lapland towns and villages were burnt. (25 km)
  • Luosto Amethyst Mine and Amethyst Spa (25 km)
  • Pelkosenniemi church (25 km)
  • Urho Kekkonen National Park Visitors' Center (80 km)

Pilgrimage along nature trails

During camp weeks, on the Wednesday, all are welcome for a mostly silent hike along a roughly 10 kilometer trail. The idea is to provide space for time with God and with one’s own thoughts while walking, unhurriedly, in God’s magnificent nature. The silent hike trail avoids the more popular routes, and does not require special hiking skills. There are a few stops for a short reading or song – and naturally a campfire coffee break. In summer, regular walking shoes are necessary, and in winter snow shoes or skies are provided.

Chapel of Northern Lights

Chapel of Northern Lights

Kairosmaja Fell Center is host to Finnish Lapland’s first Tourist Chapel, built in 1986. The Finnish name ‘Revontulikappeli’ means the Chapel of Northern Lights. Its exceptional beauty has made it a popular touristic sight in its own right. Approximately 35 000 people visit the chapel annually.

The 260-seat Chapel is open all year round from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. During tourist seasons a church service is held on Sundays at 9 a.m., Morning Devotions Monday-Saturday at 9 a.m. (in Finnish). The Chapel is also known for concerts of Christian music and songs.
